Saved by the bell

October 2017

Millions of children rarely or never hear the school bell. But every child, every youngster is entitled to quality education. That right is included in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: "Ensure equal access to quality education and promote lifelong learning for all" (SDG or Sustainable Development Goal 7). Therefore, on October 5, more than 140,000 students and teachers in more than 500 Flemish schools will ring the school bell one extra time! Since 2010, students and teachers of the Sint Vincentius Institute Gijzegem have organised Saved by the Bell on the International Day of the Teacher. The pupils inform themselves about the education situation in Nepal, they collect coins and arrange them in the form of a school bell and sell baked goods for the benefit of the Nepalese Centre for Educational Policies and Practices (CEPP), an ngo dedicated to enhancing the quality of education in the remote countryside, to motivating teachers, and informing parents.
