A child-oriented school in a natural environment

November 2018

The photographs below show realizations of CEPP, in collaboration with teachers, pupils and parents of the schools involved, and with Luca School of Arts Ghent, KU Leuven Faculty of Architecture, Artevelde University College Ghent.

One of the objectives of CEPP, the Centre for Educational Policies and Practices, is child-oriented education in a natural, green environment.
By using local, natural materials in a creative way, we can avoid the use of expensive materials. How to use local material is part of learning itself. In many cases, materials can also be re-used. A corner piled up with broken desks and benches is a common scene in our schools.

Here (in Ghante, Sindhuli, Pipalmadi, a rural region in southern Nepal),where there are no vehicles, tyres are collected from the Bagmati River, to use as play material in a natural playground.
A bench around a tree forms a meeting place for the school children of Ghante.
The parents are also involved in the construction of a green fence. In the Shree Debahit Primary School in Makwanpur District, the mothers are at work ...
... and this is the result.
The classroom layout also receives a lot of attention. The whole setup is modular: benches and low tables can be grouped in different ways. People recycle used wood to make a platform covered with carpet. Daylight enters the windows, the roof is insulated with bamboo. The walls of the class are white and quiet, there is room for didactic posters, creative work of the students, illustrations... The children can learn in a happy, relaxed atmosphere.
